Vicky in California

I appear to be the “granny” of the group, since I’m 59 (and will be 60 in a few months). You can see  a picture of me (a terrible one, but I can’t help that!) on my website, www.winattrial.com.

Technically, I’m married and have been for 32 years; however, after 23 years of marriage and 2 kids, my husband came home one night and announced that he is gay and had a new love.  He said he’d stay or go, whatever I wanted---easy decision! We’ve stayed married because of tax reasons and because neither of us has any intention of remarrying.  We’re on civil terms and still see each other at times, and get together on all the major holidays.

Simultaneously, the real estate market took a major nosedive (my husband is a realtor) and we lost our home and savings.

And a year after the Big Announcement, I had a major aneurysm and damn near died.  I still have terrible short term memory and also almost doubled my body weight from 120 lbs. to my current 185.  My dr. says the brain injury damaged my appestat and I should resign myself to being fat.

I am a psychologist although I have found it very difficult to focus on work due to my injury.  I have never done treatment---I kept wanting to hit my patients and tell them to “get over it!”  Instead, I have always focused on doing evaluations and have done many child custody evaluations and quite a few criminal law ones as well (for things like when the defendant seems mentally unable to stand trial).

I used to write a weekly newspaper column and sold several magazine articles when my kids were small (they’re 30 & 26 now) and have decided to give writing another try.

I have written an article about S.A. but the head honchos are unhappy because they say that no one can be paid for writing about the group and its mission.  I am now collecting human interests anecdotes about how soldiers have responded to our efforts, so if you have any stories, send ‘em on!

Currently, most of my time is spent writing or researching prospective articles.

I also love to read (especially mysteries) and cook (I have a collection of thousands of recipes, including almost 700 for cheesecake alone, so if you ever want to know how to cook something or what to cook or want a recipe, just send me an email.

Oh, and I am also an avid square dancer and swimmer.

Best to all,
Vicky Campagna
